10 Reasons Why You Should Eat Clean

Are you looking to lose weight? Are you wanting your body to feel better after eating? Then, you may want to consider eating clean. Eating clean has benefits beyond weight loss. Eating the right foods is linked to a wide range of health benefits, from more energy to an improved mood. No matter what your goals are, eating clean can revolutionize your life. Here are 10 reasons why you should eat clean!

1. You Will Save Money

Many say that eating healthy is more expensive than eating processed foods. But actually, it isn’t. If you plan out your clean meals for the week, you won’t risk overspending at the store or going to restaurants. By skipping pricey restaurants and unhealthy takeout orders, you’re doing yourself a huge favor. Want to stretch your clean-eating dollars? Take leftovers for lunch.

2. Makes You Smarter

In addition to saving money, eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and nuts keeps our minds sharper, and our memories stronger by a whopping 24%, proved a study published in the spring 2015 issue of Neurology. For instance, our brains function better with nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids while they slow down when we fill them with sugar (including alcohol), fast food, and the wrong kinds of fats. To sum it up, a balanced diet means better brain health!

3. Boosts Your Energy

The third reason why you should eat clean is that you will feel more energetic! Fruit is just one of the many clean foods that provide an instant dose of energy. High-fiber fruits like apples take longer to digest and can instantly stave off that afternoon slump while providing critical vitamins for the evening ahead. Other pick-me-ups include quinoa, almonds, eggs, kale, citrus fruit, and a glass of water.

4. Improves Your Mood

Your overall mood and food go hand in hand. The better the food, the better your mood! If you are feeling down, go for berries, bananas, coffee, lean proteins, chocolate, turmeric, and omega-3 fatty acids. All of these foods are proven to boost your mental state.

5. You Will Feel Stronger

Eating clean equals feeling stronger! The lean protein that comprises part of the clean-eating philosophy builds lean muscle mass and boosts metabolism, found in a study presented at The Obesity Society’s annual meeting. Some great choices for your muscles include quinoa, chickpeas, nuts, spinach, and seeds. Don’t forget animal-based products like chicken, fish, and lean beef!

6. You Will Live Longer

Try to imagine the fountain of youth made out of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Studies show that consuming these foods can extend your lifespan. A recent JAMA Internal Medicine report found that each additional 28-gram serving of whole grains per day (go for nutrient-dense ancient grains like teff, amaranth, millet, and sorghum) was associated with a 5% lower risk of dying from any cause. European researchers have also found that increasing your produce intake to more than 569 grams per day reduces your risk of mortality by 10%. So choose raw veggies whenever you can!

7. Helps Improve Sleep

While getting a good night’s sleep will help you in all aspects, eating right will also help you get the sleep you crave. Researchers found that people who ate the widest variety of foods also consumed the most antioxidants. They also drank the most water. To help improve your sleep, strive to eat a balanced diet that emphasizes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat proteins rich in B vitamins, like fish, poultry, meat, eggs, and dairy. B vitamins may also help to regulate melatonin, a hormone that regulates your sleep cycles.

8. Fights Off Inflammation

Inflammation is linked to everything from stress and brain fog to diseases such as heart disease and cancer. But according to an article published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who eat whole grains over refined ones cut their levels of C-reactive protein—a key indicator of inflammation—by 38%. And for your information, that was after controlling for weight loss.

9. Boosts Your Immunity

Not only will you feel better after eating clean, but it also helps boost your immune system! Studies show that keeping your gut bacteria happy and healthy (reach for probiotics and complex carbs!) can strengthen your immune system to reduce your likelihood of infections. Research in BMC Complementary & Alternative Medicine shows that green tea can also help fight off the flu.

10. Relieves Stress

Last but not least, eating clean will help relieve stress. Foods have a significant influence on your levels of relaxing neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, and your levels of stress-inducing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. For example, in one study, people who ate flavonoid-rich dark chocolate before undergoing a mock interview came out on top with lower adrenaline levels and felt not as stressed out.

Now that you know the top 10 reasons why you should eat clean, you have the option to choose to eat healthier. Consistently eating clean foods fills your body with many vitamins and minerals, high-quality protein, and healthy fats. Eating clean helps improve brain health, assist with weight management, build a stronger immune system, and increase energy levels, among other benefits. Colon Hydrotherapy 101

Hello friend! Would you like to feel healthier, remove toxins from your body, and lose weight? If so, we suggest taking part in colon cleansing or colon hydrotherapy! When the colon is filled with stagnant waste, dangerous toxins back up in our systems and wreak havoc on our tissues and organs. A colonic promotes relief from various disturbances by gently cleansing the colon and opening our body’s natural detoxification pathways. Keep on reading to understand colon hydrotherapy 101 better!

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon Hydrotherapy is a therapy used to cleanse your colon gently; it is like bathing your insides. Good health depends on how well we eliminate waste from our bodies, as it does upon how well we eat. When the colon is filled with stagnant waste, dangerous toxins back up in our systems and wreak havoc on our tissues and organs. A colonic promotes relief from various disturbances by gently cleansing the colon and opening our body’s natural detoxification pathways. We experience better health and well-being when the colon is clean.

What will I feel during a colon hydrotherapy session?

For most people, a colonic irrigation session can actually be a pleasant experience. By introducing purified, temperature, and pressure-regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. During a treatment, the inflow of a small amount of water and the subsequent release of waste repeats several times. The cleansing effects of colon hydrotherapy should produce better colon flow and elimination.

Will I lose weight doing colonics?

Many patients find that cleaning their colon and attaining normal bowel functions, coupled with a healthy diet, does indeed help with their weight loss goals.

Will my privacy be respected during a colonic session?

Yes! At Be Well Lifestyle Center, we strive to provide you with the utmost comfort and relaxation during your detoxification process. We will respect your privacy during a colonic session.

“Dr. Silvio Cozzetto and staff have treated me like family since my first visit several years ago. Very peaceful energy, and the food is great. Dr. Cozzetto has saved my life with his healing hands. Prevent Back Pain While Working From Home

While working from home has become more of a reality for most of the world, due to COVID19, working with back pain isn’t something we knew we were signing up for. Many people are looking for ways to prevent back pain. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourages companies and businesses to be flexible in allowing employees to stay home if their work permits or to care for sick family members when needed. So, you may have found yourself in a new work environment, at your kitchen table.

How can I prevent back pain while working from home?

Studies find that most workplaces, while not mandated, typically have more ergonomic workstations or computer setups. While the average home has a work set up that usually consists of your bed, a makeshift office space, or the kitchen table. The average person is still getting used to making their home their long-term work setup. Your area and furniture may not meet the needs of your work demands and how often you have to be at a computer during the day.

Here are a few ways many Americans, just like you, prevent back pain while working from home:

Avoid Excessive Bending

Try placing your computer at eye-level or in a position where you can avoid looking down or bending over for hours.

No bed heads

Do your best to limit the amount of time you work from your bed. While it may feel like a comfortable position, in the long run, it could cause some pain because your back isn’t getting the proper support.

Stretch and take breaks

When you can, take a moment to stretch your arms and neck. Stretching helps to alleviate the pressure of your head and keeps your muscles engaged.

Hydrate

Taking frequent water breaks not only help to prevent back pain while working from home, but it promotes an overall healthy lifestyle

Are you ready to prevent back pain while working from home? I’m sure you are! Make sure you consult your physician for the best plan for you, but these are a few things you can implement to get your routine started. These suggestions may seem small, but as the weeks turn into months of working from home, you’ll be glad you did them.

Stretches for Living with Sciatica Pain

What is Sciatica?

Have you ever experienced a sudden pain that radiates from your lower back down through your leg? Chances are that this pain is due to your sciatic nerve being affected or pinched in some way. Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back all the way down through your leg. This large nerve can affect your comfort, and your mobility if the pain is bad enough. If you keep on reading on, we offer some useful stretches for living with sciatica pain!

Potential Risk Factors Include:

  • Age: unfortunately, as we get older, our body undergoes changes, especially when it comes to our spine.
  • Occupation: if you have a job where you are constantly lifting heavy things or twisting your back in an unnatural position, this can affect your sciatic nerve. On the opposite end of that, occupations where you’re sitting for prolonged periods of time can also place additional pressure on your spine and result in a pinched sciatic nerve.
  • Obesity: being obese puts extra stress on your spine and is a leading cause of sciatica
  • Diabetes: one of the major worries from diabetes is that (in addition to your blood sugar levels being difficult to manage) it can also increase your risk of being susceptible to nerve damage.

Common causes of sciatica include herniated discs and narrowing of the spine, among other things. Often following traumatic injuries like being in a car accident, this pain can fall anywhere on a scale from mild to unbearable. Typically, pain caused by your pinched sciatica nerve only affects one side of your body. If your case is mild, it may go away on its own after time. If you feel like the discomfort is manageable, we recommend doing some of the following stretches at home to help relieve your pain. Here are helpful stretches for living with sciatica pain!

6 stretches to help relieve sciatic nerve pain

Reclining Pigeon Pose

Lay on your back and bring your affected leg up placing your unaffected leg behind your ankle. Use your leg and hands and pull your leg towards your head slowly engaging the stretch through your sciatic nerve.

Sitting Pigeon Pose

Start sitting with your legs in front of you at a 90-degree angle. Bring your affected leg up to where your ankle is laying on top of your other knee. Slowly bend forward into the stretch while trying to touch your toes.

Forward Pigeon Pose

Start in a tabletop position with your arms placed shoulder-width apart and your knees on the ground underneath your hips. Slowly bring your affected leg underneath you and straighten your back leg, placing the majority of your weight on your legs and hips. Lean forward into the stretch and try to touch your nose to the ground.

Knee to Opposite Shoulder

Laying down flat on your back, bring your affected leg into a 90-degree angle, grabbing onto your knee. While keeping your other leg straight, slowly rotate toward the side opposite of your pain (for example: if your nerve pain is on your right leg, you would rotate your hips to your left side).

Sitting Spinal Stretch

Start in a seated position with your legs directly in front of you at a 90-degree angle. Bring your affected knee up and place it over your other leg so your foot is flat on the ground. Let’s say you were experiencing sciatica pain in your right leg. You’d bring your right leg up and cross it over your left. Using your left arm, you’d place your elbow behind your right knee and rotate your shoulders backward. This twist will help your spine decompress which releases pressure on your sciatic nerve.

Standing Hamstring Stretch

If you are able to, stand with your affected leg elevated up to a 90-degree angle. Slowly lean forward and touch your toes while keeping your other foot planted flat on the floor. To deepen the stretch, try touching your nose to your knee.

For more severe cases of sciatica, these stretches will be helpful, but may not relieve as much of your pain. The important thing to know is that this pain, although it can feel uncomfortable or even debilitating, can have a natural solution.

What should I do if my sciatica is severe or worsens?

If these stretches for living with sciatica pain do not help and you are experiencing excruciating pain that lasts more than a week, we encourage you to reach out to a reputable chiropractor. In cases where you’re experiencing numbness or muscle weakness, ignoring it shouldn’t be an option. An experienced chiropractor, like Dr. Silvio Cozzetto at Be Well Lifestyle Centers, will be able to realign your spine and relieve pressure from your sciatic nerve. Many of our patients come to us searching for a solution and leave feeling ten times better than when they walked through our doors.

  • Discomfort anywhere along the sciatic nerve path

What are the benefits of Acupuncture?

We know the idea of acupuncture can seem scary. Needles aren’t exactly our favorite things either, but we promise the effects of acupuncture vastly outweigh the fear of the treatment.

What happens during the process of acupuncture?

The process of acupuncture is quite simple. A specialist will insert extremely thin needles into a patient’s skin at various depths to activate pressure points throughout the body. This provides relief from pain, potentially helps to fight illness, and is said to help balance a patient’s energy, which ultimately restores balance in their lives. The treatment lasts for about 20 minutes, give or take, depending on your acupuncturist’s recommendation.

Although the effects of this ancient Chinese treatment method are difficult to prove, so many people find relief from it that it has become a sought after natural source of pain relief. So on that note, we’re sure you’re wondering what benefits (aside from pain relief) that acupuncture can provide. Let’s explore these in greater detail, shall we?

Here are 5 Benefits of Acupuncture

1. Reduces Stress

You have demands that place additional stress on you, whether that be from work or happenings in your personal life. Acupuncture is known to act as a source of relief for that stress that you carry with you. It has been proven to reduce the stress hormone, boosting your mood and promoting more overall happiness.

2. Headache Relief

If you have chronic headaches or migraines, acupuncture may be a great therapy to try. By targeting pressure points, the treatment can reduce or alleviate tension in some areas, lowering your pain levels. Many people who use this therapy are in search of natural alternatives to medicine and feel a sense of euphoria after their treatment.

3. Boosts Immune System

It may sound strange, but acupuncture is also effective in boosting your immune system. It has been proven that with regular treatments, your body begins to produce more white blood cells, giving your body a better chance of fighting off a cold or the flu.

4. Lower levels of Back, Neck, and Joint Pain

A majority of your pain comes from inflammation and swelling as a result of straining your body. Acupuncture intentionally provides drug-free relief by targeting those areas of inflammation. By a specialist inserting small needles into the areas, it mitigates the tension.

5. Improves Mental Clarity

With a stronger immune system, having less stress, relief from headaches, back pain, and more, it is easy to see how acupuncture can provide you with improved mental clarity. It is also known for improving patient’s sleep deprivation, like those with insomnia.

When you try acupuncture treatments, you’ll have more energy to tackle your day and feel better doing it.

Does an acupuncture treatment hurt?

Although you may feel the needles in your skin, the treatment isn’t extremely painful. Upon entry, you might experience a pinch or sting, but once they are there, you won’t notice them unless your acupuncturist spins them to manipulate the pressure point.

However, if you are ever trying acupuncture and you feel uncomfortable or like you are in pain, you should alert your acupuncturist right away.

Contact us to start acupuncture therapy!

If you are interested in trying acupuncture treatment, we would encourage you to speak with a doctor or an experienced acupuncturist. As with any treatment, there could be side effects. In this case, the most common side effects are pain from needle entry and minor bleeding once the needles are taken out.

If you have any questions or concerns about acupuncture, we’d be happy to speak with you about it. If you’re interested in scheduling an appointment with us, contact our center at (248) 792-6570. We’ll get you the soonest appointment available, so we can help you start to feel better. We look forward to speaking with you!

5 Easy Ways to Relieve Back Pain at Work

Hey you! Yes, you… we see you over there slouching. Even as you’re reading this, you’re hunched over your phone, tablet, or computer taking in this scolding and denying that we can actually see you.

While all of that is true, the ironic part is that while you clicked on an article about how to relieve back pain, you are probably currently sitting or standing in a position that directly causes your back pain. So we’re going to challenge you to sit the way you’re supposed to sit for the next 3 minutes. Put your shoulders back, keep your head up, plant your feet firmly on the ground, and read on my friends.

Time starts… NOW!

Back pain is more common than you think

A large majority of our customers come to us because they are experiencing back pain in one form or another. The reality is, at least eight out of ten people in America will experience back pain at some point in their life. Astoundingly, a large majority of this back pain will become chronic back pain after a patient experiences regular discomfort over a period of at least three months. Perhaps you wouldn’t guess this, but our friends that work in offices and sit at desks all day are more likely to suffer from chronic back pain than are people who work in physically demanding jobs.

This fact might surprise you, but when you ponder over it, it makes sense. When you are sitting for a long period of time in the same spot, your spine begins to feel added pressure to it because it’s stuck in an unnaturally curved state. In fact, 100% Chiropractic says, “Sitting in this position puts around 200 pounds of pressure on your lumbar spine, or your lower back.” No wonder you experience so much back pain.

Luckily, we have some simple solutions to reduce or alleviate some of your back pain. These tips are easy to implement and can result in a huge difference in the amount of back pain you feel daily.

Still sitting with good posture? Let’s jump in.

5 Tips for Minimizing Back Pain at the Office

1. Check your chair

In a perfect world, all office chairs would have lower lumbar support to comfortably accommodate the natural curvature of your spine, allowing you to sit back comfortably. However, the reality is that most office chairs don’t. Does this mean that you should continue to have posture like the Hunchback of Notre Dame? NO. Bring in a pillow, blanket, or a towel to position behind your lower back to make sitting more comfortable.

Also, be sure to adjust the height of your chair so that your feet can rest flat on the floor. This will help keep your legs, knees, hips, and spine in better alignment.

Side note: If you can switch your chair for an exercise ball, that will always be better than any office chair.

2. Mind your monitor

When possible, keep your monitor high enough that you don’t have to look down at it. This will prevent your neck from being out of alignment. Lots of us work on laptops which makes it harder not to look down. We recommend propping your laptop up on books, boxes, anything that elevates it enough to where you’re not hunched over it. It’s also a good idea to have your screen about an arm’s length away from you.

3. Rock your body

Get up and move your body during the day! Don’t be stuck in the same position in the same place for eight hours a day. Stretch, dance (to NSYNC), wiggle, take a jog to the door you can’t wait to go through at the end of the day. Whatever and however you move is better than being a statue. Take short breaks, even five minutes will do, and walk around to restore your spine to its correct position and get your blood flowing.

Side note: if you work on strengthening your core muscles, this will also help improve your posture and reduce back pain.

4. If you're going to be a statue, be a standing statue

If you are unable to move from your desk, better than sitting all day is to stand at your desk. Standing not only helps take the pressure off of your back, but it also will help you improve your productivity due to easier blood flow and limited opportunity for lethargicness.

5. Make an appointment with your chiropractor

If nothing else, we encourage you to an appointment with a reputable chiropractor. They will be able to restore your spine to its correct alignment, reducing your back pain and helping you to live a better life.

Your appointment doesn’t have to be with the amazing Dr. Silvio Cozzetto if our Birmingham, MI location is too far away for you (although we’d love to welcome you to our family). Your health and wellness is more important to us than your business, and we know you deserve more than to simply accept your back pain.

Our treatments are specially designed to fit your needs. Call us at (248) 792-6570 or schedule your appointment online today!

Top 7 Reasons to See a Chiropractor

Chiropractors provide relief to patients that experience all kinds of pain throughout their bodies.

Most people think that you only need to see a chiropractor after you have been injured, or when you feel discomfort. Although these are both great circumstances in which you should seek chiropractic care, there are not the only instances in which seeing a chiropractor would be helpful. Let’s take a deeper dive into the top 7 reasons to see a chiropractor.

Suffering from Neck and Back Pain

Body pain can result from a multitude of things, including major or minor spinal injuries, bad posture, uncomfortable sleeping conditions. When your spine comes out of alignment, neck and back pain can throw your entire day off, making you irritable, uncomfortable, and unproductive. The good news is that a skilled chiropractor such as Dr. Cozzetto can correct your spine’s alignment in as little as once visit. Treating the source of your pain is far more important than treating the symptom when the ultimate goal is to be pain-free.

Continuous Headaches

Piggybacking off of neck and back pain, headaches are often a symptom of your spine being out of alignment. This can put pressure on where your head connects to your neck. Often, the treatment for painful headaches may lay in adjusting your spine or neck to relieve the pressure from your nerves.

Exhaustion or Fatigue

If your body feels like it is tired all of the time, this could have something to do with your central nervous system’s lousy performance. Often, you don’t even realize the stress your body is undergoing until you are in the thick of dragging fatigue. Visiting a chiropractor can help you identify where your exhaustion may be coming from.

Athletes Recovering From Injury

Another one of the top 7 reasons to see a chiropractor is when an athlete is recovering from a serious injury. Chiropractors are notorious for working with athletes who have been injured while exercising or playing sports. Chiropractic therapy is personalized to the patient and based on their injury, the chiropractor will determine a plan to help get the athlete back on their way to normal mobility once more.

Prenatal Discomfort

What women’s bodies do during pregnancy is incredible. The rearrangement of their organs within their stomach and abdomen is a daunting task, not to mention the additional weight that comes with preparing to bring a child into this world. Expectantly so, this places a great deal of tension on the spine, swelling, and new joint tension or stiffness. At Be Well Lifestyle Centers, we specialize in treating pregnant mothers. We are here to help alleviate your pain and discomfort as much as possible.

Arthritis and Joint Pain

Many chiropractic patients suffer from arthritis and joint pain. When joints become inflamed, it can affect everyday activities such as walking and driving. Chiropractic therapy provides relief to patients who suffer from joint pain and also acts proactively to ward off any joint flare-ups in the future.

Holistic Alternatives To Medicine or Surgery

Chiropractic care is also a highly sought-after practice as an alternative to traditional medical solutions. Sometimes, surgery or medications may not be the best answer. Instead (when appropriate) we work to find natural solutions to relieve pain therapeutically.

We are here to treat the source of your pain, not just the symptoms. At Be Well Lifestyle Centers, we listen to our patients to discover where their pain stems from. Life is too short to live with pain. Call us at (248) 792-6570 or visit our Birmingham, MI location to schedule a chiropractic appointment today!

How Does Sleep Affect Your Health?

Do you really understand your relationship between sleep and your health?

Sure, we all know that we should get enough sleep so our body can rest and repair itself, but do you know the consequences of not getting enough sleep? Beyond constant fatigue, there are serious health consequences you can subject your body to by not getting an adequate amount of sleep every night.

Note: this article is directed toward people who consistently do not get enough sleep (not just one night here and there). However, it is beneficial for everyone to have a complete understanding of how your body works and its relationship with sleep, so read on.

Soon, we’ll dive deeper into the relationship sleep has with different aspects of your life, but first, we want to get some generalities out of the way.

Yes, everyone should get an appropriate amount of sleep, but that doesn’t come down to a singular number for everyone. In fact, there are many people who feel great after only getting 5-6 hours of sleep rather than 8-10.

A night’s sleep for some might look like an 8 PM bedtime and waking up at 7 AM and they will still be tired, even after 11 hours of sleep. For others, they don’t fall asleep until 11:30 PM and they can wake up at 6 AM feeling well rested and ready to tackle their day. Either way, you should know (within reason) how much sleep you need to get in order to wake up and feel energized.

Children and young adults tend to need more hours of sleep for them to be able to process information and be fully rested for the next day, but again, it depends on the individual. But how does sleep affect your health?

With all of that being said, let’s look at the relationship between your sleep and your body weight, potential diseases, immune system, mental health, and relationships with others.

Sleep's Relationship with your Body Weight

Lack of sleep has been connected to being overweight or obese. When you sleep, your body produces a chemical called leptin that helps your body to feel full and one called ghrelin that drives your hunger. No sleep = No leptin or ghrelin. This means no chemicals to help control your hunger.

Sleep's Relationship with Potential Diseases

There have been many studies in which sleep deprivation has increased the likelihood of your chances to be diagnosed with Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, hypertension, high blood pressure, and more. Conversely, studies have also shown that getting an appropriate amount of sleep can reverse this and help prevent diseases such as those aforementioned.

Sleep's Relationship with your Immune System

When you are unable to spend time in deep sleep (see below), it affects your immune system directly. This can also increase inflammatory mediators, reducing the body’s ability to heal. Your body is less able to fight off bacteria, resulting in more colds and flus.

Sleep's Relationship with Mental Health

Your brain, as much as your body, needs adequate time to rest. No matter how old you are, the amount of information needed to process everything that happens in a day is immeasurable and can fluctuate between good and bad days. Lack of sleep can also potentially have effects on mental illness, anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.

Sleep's Relationship with your Life

There is no question that a lack of sleep can be equivalent to lack of motivation, lack of friendliness, and lack of engagement. It also leaves your irritable, snappy, and of course, tired. This means that all of your relationships and friendships are affected. We know you don’t want to be tired all of the time. Feeling drained doesn’t make you feel good. That’s why we can’t stress enough the importance of getting a goodnight’s sleep.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember about your sleep is this:

Overall, the quality of sleep you get is more important that the quantity (number of hours) you get. If you are sleeping for a long time, but it isn’t a deep, restful sleep, it doesn’t matter that you slept for 12 hours. If you don’t know anything about REM and NREM sleep, here’s a brief overview:

NREM (No Rapid Eye Movement):

When your body is falling asleep (or back to sleep). It has three phases:

Stage 1: Your eyes are closed but it’s still fairly easy to wake you up.

Stage 2: This is when you’re sleeping lightly and your body begins to slow down your heart rate, lowering your body temperature slightly.

Stage 3: This is where the magic happens (and no we aren’t talking about dreams- yet). This is when your body goes into deep sleep and has the ability to begin repairing itself by regenerating tissue, multiplying blood cells, building your immune system, building muscle, and lengthening your bones. Typically, this happens after the first 20 minutes you’ve been asleep and can last longer than an hour.

After that, your body goes into REM (Rapid Eye Movement):

This is sleep that starts in small increments and can increase through the night. This is when you dream. When you come out of REM sleep, most of the time you jump back into Stage 3, or deep sleep, and rotate through the NREM and REM cycle.

All of this is to reiterate the idea that if you’re sleeping lightly for a long amount of time, this doesn’t do nearly as much for your body as it would if you were to sleep for less time but have multiple opportunities for deep sleep.

According to the experts at Harvard University’s Medical School

“…Experts have concluded that getting enough high-quality sleep may be as important to health and well-being as nutrition and exercise.”

(Harvard Medical School, 2008).

Guys, nothing about this has changed over the last 10+ years. Sleep is still an incredibly important thing and should be considered something in the forefront of your mind instead of an afterthought at night.
