5 Exercises to Improve Your Well Being
Stretching
Stretching is de-stressing; it protects the body from injury and improves posture. A simple 5-10 minutes in the morning or evening will have a profound effect on both your sense of wellbeing and flexibility levels. It doesn’t need to be complicated; stretch all the major muscle groups while focusing on breathing and relaxing into the stretch.
Deep Breathing
Breathing is hugely overlooked. It is the most basic and necessary of human functions, but we never ask if we are doing it well. Could we breathe better, and what effect might that have on our health and wellbeing? Of course, breathing usually happens without you thinking about it, but you can breathe consciously to improve your breathing and lower stress, and improve health and happiness. Lay flat on your back, place your hands over your stomach and take a deep breath in. You should feel your stomach expand against your hands. Hold for a second and then fully breathe out. Repeat for 10 rounds.
Steady Cardio
Cardio has many benefits. It’s probably not the best way to lose weight, but it is good for health and wellbeing. Especially if you enjoy steady cardio, try getting out in nature for a hike in the mountains or walk on the beach. Swimming, cycling, playing sport are all great forms of steady cardio.
Weight Training
Weight training is an overlooked component of a healthy exercise regime. It balances hormones, builds bone density, increases metabolism, burns fat, and increases strength. Sounds good, right? Make sure you fit it into your regular workout routine!
High-Intensity Interval Training
High-intensity interval training is a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less severe recovery periods until too exhausted to continue. High-intensity interval training has a reputation for increasing stress levels, owing to a surge in cortisol and adrenaline. Still, as you become more active, you should find that your body adapts to this, learns to cope, and becomes more resilient over time, supporting stress coping strategies in daily life.
